Descrizione

Le mwnqspecie di questo genere sono piante mwngerbacee perenni o bassi mwnwarbusti desertici. Normalmente sono prive di spine (raramente ne sono provviste).cite-ref-kj-3-0[3]cite-ref-4[4]cite-ref-fs-5-0[5]cite-ref-herr-6-0[6]cite-ref-7[7]

Le mwtqfoglie lungo il mwtgcaule sono disposte in modo alterno, hanno una lamina mwtwpennatosetta o talvolta intera-dentata. La forma può essere da lineare a oblunga. Spesso la superficie è bianco-argentata (tomentosa) e verde altrove. Le foglie non sono decorrenti.

Le mwuqinfiorescenze si compongono di mwugcapolini lungamente pedicellati, solitari e mwuweterogami. I mwvacapolini sono formati da un mwvqinvolucro a forma da cilindrica a ovoidale composto da mwvgbrattee (o squame) all'interno del quale un mwvwricettacolo fa da base ai fiori tutti mwwatubulosi. Le brattee dell'involucro, disposte su più serie in modo embricato, sono di vario tipo: lanceolate con lobi (appendici) triangolari lacerato-fimbriati colorati di nero o argento; le brattee spesso sono scariose e larghe ma non sono spinose. Il ricettacolo normalmente è sericeo.

I fiori sono tutti del tipo mwwgtubuloso.cite-ref-8[8] I fiori sono tetra-ciclici (ossia sono presenti 4 verticilli: mwxwcalice – mwyacorolla – mwyqandroceo – mwyggineceo) e mwywpentameri (ogni verticillo ha 5 elementi). I fiori in genere sono mwzaermafroditi e mwzqactinomorfi. I fiori esterni sono sterili e staminoidi (gli staminodi sono minuti e racchiusi nel tubo della corolla); la disposizione è radiale con ampi lobi divisi in 5 - 10 subuguali lacinie.

• Calice: i mwfasepali del mwfqcalice sono ridotti ad una coroncina di squame.
• La mwfwcorolla in genere è colorata di blu o violetto, raramente giallo o altri colori.
• mwgqAndroceo: gli mwggstami sono 5 con filamenti liberi, glabri e papillosi, mentre le mwgwantere sono saldate in un manicotto (o tubo) circondante lo mwhastilo.cite-ref-10[10]
• mwigGineceo: lo stilo è filiforme; gli mwiwstigmi delLo mwjastilo sono due divergenti (i due rami dello stilo dei fiori bisessuali sono connati e divergenti solo nella parte più alta). L'mwjqovario è mwjginfero mwjwuniloculare formato da 2 mwkacarpelli.

Il frutto è un mwkgachenio con mwkwpappo. Gli acheni, con forme oblunghe o strettamente ovoidali e lateralmente compressi, sono mwlaglabri o raramente pelosi. Il mwlqpericarpo dell'achenio è mwlgsclerificato; alla sommità l'achenio è provvisto di una piastra dritta. Il pappo (deciduo o persistente) è inserito in un anello mwlwparenchimatico sulla piastra apicale e in genere è formato da due anelli di setole variamente pennate (quelle interne sono più lunghe); raramente è formato da una sola serie di scaglie oppure è assente. Gli acheni possiedono mwmaelaisomi ed hanno un mwmqilo laterale.

Biologia

• Impollinazione: l'mwnqimpollinazione avviene tramite insetti (mwngimpollinazione entomogama).
• Riproduzione: la fecondazione avviene fondamentalmente tramite l'impollinazione dei fiori (vedi sopra).
• Dispersione: i semi cadendo a terra (dopo essere stati trasportati per alcuni metri dal vento per merito del pappo – mwoqdisseminazione anemocora) sono successivamente dispersi soprattutto da insetti tipo formiche (disseminazione mwogmirmecoria).

Distribuzione

Le specie di questo genere si trovano in mwpqEuropa orientale, mwpgAsia occidentale e centrale.cite-ref-kew-2-1[2]

Tassonomia

La mwrqfamiglia delle mwrgAsteracee (o mwrwCompositae, mwsamwsqnomen conservandum) è la più numerosa del mondo vegetale, comprende oltre mwsg23 000 mwswspecie distribuite su mwta1 535 mwtqgeneri,cite-ref-judd520-9-1[9] oppure mwug22 750 specie e mwuw1 530 generi secondo altre fonticite-ref-11[11] (una delle mwwachecklist più aggiornata elenca fino a mwwq1 679 generi).cite-ref-12[12] La famiglia attualmente (2021) è divisa in 16 sottofamiglie.cite-ref-apgiv-1-1[1]

La tribù Cardueae a sua volta è suddivisa in 12 mwywsottotribù (la sottotribù Centaureinae è una di queste).cite-ref-kj-3-1[3]cite-ref-fs-5-1[5]cite-ref-herr-6-1[6]cite-ref-barr-13-0[13]

Filogenesi

La classificazione della sottotribù mw3gCentaureinae rimane ancora problematica e piena di incertezze. Nell'ambito della sottotribù questo genere fa parte del gruppo tassonomico informale denominato "Psephellus Group" (in precedenza il genere era descritto all'interno del "Basal Grade" ma anche in "Plectocephalus Group").cite-ref-kj-3-2[3] Il gruppo composto dai generi mw4wmw5aZoegea e mw5qPsephellus è posizionato, da un punto di vista filogenetico, nella zona centrale delle Centaureinae.cite-ref-herr-6-2[6]cite-ref-barr-13-1[13] In precedenti studi occupava una posizione più "basale".cite-ref-fs-5-2[5]
